Welcome to the Eastern Canada Tree Species Selector Tool! This tool can be used to help guide tree species selection for varying conditions and planting sites in Eastern Canada. This tool includes information for over 200 species of trees, each with their use-potential, size, characteristics, tolerance etc. This tool aims to provide information to architects, arborists, growers, landscapers, and homeowners, and assist in the appropriate tree species selection for differing growing environments.
Why is tree species selection so important? Trees provide numerous ecological, social, economic and health benefits, however, to ensure success and longevity of plantings, we need to take into consideration the environmental conditions of our planting site to see the greatest success, and experience the full benefits of these tree plantings. There are a variety of factors we need to take into consideration when planting trees, these include, but are not limited to, planting site, watering, soil quality/quantity, hardiness zone, sunlight, drainage, and salt tolerance. With this tool, we can best select the appropriate species for the intended planting sites, and provide the best ecological services.
The Ontario Landscape Tree Planting Guide is the most comprehensive reference document available to the landscape industry.
It captures years of research conducted by Vineland and experts from around the world on tree survival and establishment in challenging environments. The validated recommendations will guide green industry practitioners to sustainably design, build and maintain our Canadian landscape. The guide is based on the comprehensive review of the research contained within Landscape Ontario’s original document developed in 1994 and revised in 2005 to ensure that the information is relevant to the industry. The user-friendly guide is broken up into step-by-step chapters providing readers with a summary of relevant content and up-to-date research findings. A series of corresponding field sheets are also available where pertinent information in chapters is itemized into actionable items.
We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Landscape Ontario, the Canadian Tree Fund, and all of our Consortium members for their invaluable support in updating this important tool. Your commitment and collaboration have been instrumental in bringing this project to life, and we are deeply grateful for your dedication to advancing the industry and the environment.
Thank you for your continued partnership and shared vision!
